My name is Darrell Keys Higgins (AKA DJ Bigg Higg). I’ve been a DJ for 42 years, starting on Long Island at a mostly white club called Dracula’s, where I relied on my skills and personality to overcome racism and earn my place. That opportunity led to residencies at major Long Island clubs including Uncle Sam’s, Roxy’s, Feathers, and Penrod’s. I was also the first DJ to play hip hop in Long Island clubs, convincing owners to take the risk until they saw it packed the dance floor with diverse crowds. I later spent 12 years at the world-famous Copacabana in Manhattan playing freestyle, hip hop, and house music.
DJ Bigg Higg brings decades of experience, deep roots in hip-hop and party culture, and the ability to read a room and move a crowd. From elegant celebrations to grown-folks parties, family events, reunions, and corporate functions, every event is built around the energy of the guests and the experience being created.
From 1991–1993, I also served as Head of Security for Russell Simmons at Def Jam, a role earned through long-standing relationships with Chuck D and Flavor Flav of Public Enemy. We all grew up on Long Island alongside other crews like Dr. Dre’s Concept crew, supporting one another while building our careers.
Personal Achievements
Because of my relationship with Public Enemy, I helped open the door for my brother Bryan Higgins, who secured a deal for the group he created, Leaders of the New School. The group—Charlie Brown, Dinco D, and Busta Rhymes—and I later went on an East Coast tour together.
